Had an amazing day on Monday serving non-profit organizations of Los Angeles community through Taproot Foundation.
It was a great experience of brainstorming, problem solving, and teamwork.
Some of the major topics were similar to struggles for profit companies face, such as Budgeting, petty cash/Credit Card use and tracking, system implementation and data transfers, and revenue strategy.
For Budgeting for Non-profit, following categorization was recommended as well as monthly review and approval processes:
Master Budget
Operating Budget* - sub categories
Cash Flow Budget
Static Budget
Donor-restriction and
Non-donor restriction for usage
Program Expenses | Support Service Expense
Contributions
Fundraising Events
Grants
Member Dues
For discussions of Revenue Models for Non-profit, following topics were discussed:
Events (Tickets & Retail Sales)
Gallery (Donation)
Large Contracts
Donor Subscriptions
For budgeting and petty-cash usage, applications such as Mint and Expensify were discussed for smaller organizations to simply the tracking without a full-time book keeper/accountant. (Mint is a very simple app from QuickBooks company, provides graphs and budget to actual at a click of a button without having to sit on a desk. Cash withdrawals can be split and notated. Expensify gives ability to save receipts).
Organizational identity and what it stood for as well as planning largely impacted the numbers, and those areas were discussed further with Marketing and HR teams.
It was a very rewarding day, and hope to continue our pro-bono consulting services to more organizations as our firm grows.
